Abstract
In May 2009, after 27 years of inter-ethnic strife, Sri Lankan civil war came to an end.
This paper, initially analyzing different aspects of conflict between Tamils and Sinhalese, focuses on the development of relations between Colombo and India, traditional and influent partner of the island. Linked to India’s strategic interests, recent trends of Chinese approach to Sri Lanka are then analyzed, considering the fundamental geographical position of the country. In this sense, since regions of Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean are increasing their strategic role, interests of global actors as United States and Russia are taken into consideration.
The current transition phase of Sri Lanka, with problems related to twenty years internal conflict still alive, will be fundamental in order to understand the future of the island especially in a moment that puts Colombo at the center of an international competition.
